Huge Upcoming Project: Costuming Hamlet

Hey everyone, as promised I’m back to keep you updated about my future sewing endeavors.

Firstly I have been doing a little bit of commission home sewing for my mother’s coworkers making slipcovers for beds to be disguised as couches. That isn’t really interesting but it’s something.

The BIG news, as obvious by the title, is that I am working on another theater show! This time a senior thesis of a different take on Hamlet by William Shakespeare. It will be going up in November of this year so of course the director and I have started the design phase of the project now. I will be making some of the costume pieces by hand so I need to get a head start on it. I don’t know how much of the project I can talk about just yet but hopefully I’ll be able to talk about some of the more interesting, general features.

I will be doing the costumes for the show and am currently in the ‘sharing pinterest inspiration’ stage of the process. She will be sending me the edited draft of the play sometime this week and then I will I have to have costume sketches done by the 5th so hopefully I will be able to go into more detail when I upload those designs.

In other news, the other projects I have going on for me this year are:

  • Halloween costumes for my friend and I (Punk! Raven and Starfire)
  • Finishing a dress for my mother that just needs some fitting, a hem and a lot of zipper work
  • My birthday ball dress for George Washington’s birthday in February
  • Costuming Henry V in the spring of next semester. (Yes, another show and yay more Shakespeare!)
  • Possibly starting work on my first quilt!

Alright guys, that’s everything for now. I’ll hopefully be updating soon.

See ya!

Striped Batman Circle Skirt

So I own a circle skirt that I made for myself out of fabric that looks like vintage MARVEL comic book covers and has some key heroes on it because I love the shit out of MARVEL. My roommate’s favorite superhero is the DC powerhouse Batman, so I made one for her as well! One day we will wear them together I’m sure.

So here we go:

So this is the fabric, as you can see the pattern alternates which direction the bats are facing so there is really no long way to cut it.

So then I cut out the circle skirt pattern from a few copies of my schools paper that has been laying around the dorm room.

Then I folded the fabric in a square so that both of the straight lines of the pattern were on fold. So the only parts that actually got cut out was the inner circle and the outer curve.

Perfect circles! The outer circle and inner circle were the best circles I have ever cut in my sewing career and I’m really proud of them.

Zipper time. Because of how the stripes are going across the front and back of the skirt I decided to put the zipper and closures in the side. So I cut straight down the blue stripe so that once sewed in it would be hidden in the black and between the yellow.

This was my first time using my invisible zipper foot ant it was wonderful. Oh my gosh it was the best. I still need some practice with it to get invisible zippers perfect but I am one step closer.

So there was the finished zipper. I then added a waist band, and then hand sewed a hook and eye and a snap on for security.

And here is the finished skirt on my roommate:

Well that’s it for now, thanks guys!
